• Overview

Grisot often depicts a colourful and light-hearted world populated by dancers, models and fashionable women, rendered with a playful sense of movement and personality.

Pierre Grisot was born in Paris in 1911. His parents initially encouraged him to pursue a practical profession, and he was therefore directed towards the study of science and engineering. After completing his qualifications, he accepted a position as an engineer in the town of Besançon, where his family resided. Yet despite this conventional path, Grisot possessed a deeply creative temperament and had long felt the desire to express himself through painting. Ultimately, he made the decisive choice to abandon his engineering career in order to dedicate himself fully to art. Returning to Paris, Grisot enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs, where he studied painting for a year before continuing his training at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. There he earned a diploma as a teacher of drawing, a profession he practised for several years. However, his commitment to artistic independence soon led him to relinquish teaching as well, enabling him to focus entirely on developing his own distinctive style.

Throughout his career, Grisot exhibited regularly in Paris, notably at the Salon des Indépendants, and was associated with artists of the so-called School of Paris, exhibiting alongside prominent figures such as Maurice de Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, and Jacques Villon. These connections situated him within a lively artistic milieu that valued individuality, decorative colour and expressive freedom. Grisot developed a highly recognisable body of work characterised by its charm, wit and theatrical elegance. A recurring subject is the stylish, self-assured young woman - portrayed in vibrant hues and with distinctive, almost pixie-like features - whose presence lends his compositions an air of sophistication and gentle humour.
