Overview
Combining realism, stylisation and abstraction to masterful effect, Andrew Denman has solidified himself as one of the best animal painters working today.
With wildlife painting becoming an ever more crowded field, the ability of its practitioners to stand out from the crowd has become a mark of rare quality. Constantly experimenting in acrylics and oils, Andrew Denman's unique and dynamic voice has been highly valued by leading collectors of wildlife art. Born in California in 1978, Andrew quickly developed a keen interest in both fine art and wildlife as a subject. While still at high school, he would organise a solo exhibition of his works at a local library, and was soon participating in exhibitions along the west coast. During this period he would learn from leading American wildlife painters appearing at the same shows such as Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders, and John Seerey-Lester. After completing his artist studies at Saint Mary's College in his home state, Denman would quickly translate his teenage success into national recognition as a professional artist, while also teaching in San Francisco.
In the last twenty years Denman has been widely lauded amongst wildlife painters and collectors for the freshness he brings to the genre. His works have been exhibited worldwide and he has been featured across multiple art and wildlife publications. His solo exhibition, The Modern Wild has toured the US on multiple occasions, work which has won him three Awards of Excellence from the Society of Animal Artists and a residency in Jackson, Wyoming as the Lanford Monroe Memorial Artist in Residence. Today, Denman works primarily from studios in Tucson, Arizona, where proximity to vast wilderness and national parks allows him to observe animals within their natural environments. This direct engagement with wildlife continues to inform the energy, movement and authenticity that define his paintings. As his reputation continues to grow, his work remains highly sought after by collectors who value both technical excellence and a bold, contemporary interpretation of the natural world.
