Overview
In recent years, Dolman has chosen to paint exclusively on aluminium panels, a modern support valued for its exceptional stability and archival properties. The smooth, resilient surface allows for extraordinary precision, enabling the artist to achieve the fine detail and refined finish that have become defining characteristics of his work.
Sam Dolman is a contemporary British artist renowned for his highly detailed oil paintings of animals. From an early age he demonstrated both a natural artistic ability and a deep affinity with the natural world. Although he initially pursued a professional career in accountancy, he later recognised that painting was his true vocation and committed himself fully to developing his practice as a wildlife artist. A formative period spent living in Spain provided abundant inspiration, where dramatic sunrises and sunsets offered opportunities to explore light, colour and atmosphere.
Upon returning to England, the landscapes and rural life of the Peak District became a new and enduring source of subject matter. It was here that cattle - admired for their intelligence, individuality and quietly inquisitive nature - emerged as a particularly popular theme within his work, and they remain among his most recognisable subjects today. Over time, Dolman broadened his focus to include a wider range of domestic and wild animals, with big cats, and especially tigers, becoming some of the most technically demanding and rewarding creatures for him to depict. Dolman's achievements have been recognised internationally: the American Art Awards have honoured him twice with the distinction of Most Realistic Animal Painter in the World. In the United Kingdom, he has received further recognition as a runner-up in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition and has been commended at the prestigious David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year awards. His work has also been featured in the book Modern Masters, as well as in publications including Leisure Painter, Southwest Art Magazine, and the Masterpiece Collection in Vogue.
