• Overview

Regarded as one of the leading practitioners of trompe l'oeil, mural painting and specialist decoration, Paul Czainski's compositions extend the concerns of his narrative imagery, combining wit with a high level of technical precision.

Paul Czainski studied Fine Art at Leeds College of Art and Goldsmiths College, London, before establishing a distinguished career working alongside leading interior designers including Nicky Haslam, David Mlinaric, John Stephanidis, and Colefax and Fowler. Renowned for his expertise in trompe l’oeil, mural painting and specialist decoration, he has contributed to a wide range of significant commissions, including work at historic sites such as Hampton Court Palace and the Queen’s House, Greenwich. His role within these collaborations has often remained discreet, though central to the realisation of complex decorative schemes. His work is also held in a number of important private collections, and reflects a sustained engagement with traditional decorative techniques.

Alongside this work, Czainski has maintained an independent studio practice, increasingly focusing in recent years on painting, drawing and collaborative projects with his wife, Chris. These have included film, performance and installation, extending his practice beyond traditional media. His work draws on a range of influences, including pattern, decorative surface, chiaroscuro and elements of the imagined or theatrical. Subject matter is often derived from close observation of his immediate surroundings, particularly his garden, which serves as both source and extension of his artistic activity. Working across a wide range of media, from charcoal and etching to oil and acrylic, he moves fluidly between large-scale compositions and more intimate works, maintaining a consistent focus on form, structure and visual invention. His practice continues to evolve through a balance of commissioned work and independent exploration.
