Overview
Yvon Grac continues to reflect a sustained interest in colour as the primary structure through which his images are constructed.
Born in 1945 in Nice, a city whose Mediterranean light and colour have remained central to his artistic outlook, Yvon Grac studied locally and chose to establish his studio there, working within the visual atmosphere of the Côte d’Azur and drawing inspiration from the landscape, architecture and daily life of the region. Grac’s paintings are recognised for their vivid palette and energetic compositions. He frequently employs saturated colour and strong contrasts, arranging forms and motifs in a way that creates a sense of movement across the surface of the canvas. Figures, animals, still life elements and imagined scenes often appear within his compositions, rendered in a stylised and expressive manner.
Although best known as a painter, Grac has also worked in sculpture and printmaking, exploring similar themes across different mediums. His distinctive approach has made his work immediately recognisable, and in France he is often associated with an optimistic visual language centred on colour and expressive form. Grac has exhibited widely in France and internationally, and his work forms part of numerous private collections.
