• Overview

Kenneth’s journey with Gladwell & Patterson spans generations. Since his early shows with the gallery in 2010, his work has enchanted collectors and critics alike. Our relationship with Kenneth has been one of profound mutual respect and artistic trust—one that has allowed his creativity to flourish and his unique visual language to be championed time and again.

Kenneth Webb is one of the most distinctive British and Irish landscape painters of the post-war period, with a career spanning more than seventy years and a body of work defined by continual reinvention, extraordinary colour and an intensely personal response to the natural world. Across decades of painting, his style has evolved through many distinct phases, yet the landscape has remained an enduring source of inspiration: not simply as something to be observed, but as a vehicle for memory, sensation and emotion. Webb's paintings transform familiar subjects - fields, bogs, gardens, wildflowers and expansive skies - into richly charged compositions in which colour takes on an almost emotional force. From his earliest years at art school, he resisted a purely naturalistic palette, instead developing a visual language that is unmistakably his own. Saturated pinks, violets, blues and greens are pushed beyond description to convey the intensity of a remembered place, the warmth of sunlight or the exhilaration of standing within a landscape. This freedom with colour, combined with increasingly bold scale and expressive handling, has given his work its remarkable vitality. Throughout his career Webb has remained restlessly inventive, moving between more structured landscape compositions and increasingly immersive, near-abstract interpretations of nature while retaining the same fundamental sensitivity to place. His achievements have been recognised through exhibitions at major institutions, including the Royal Academy in London, while his influence extends beyond his own studio practice. In 1957 he founded the Irish School of Landscape Painting and later lectured at the Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum and National Gallery, London. Gladwell & Patterson has represented Kenneth since 2010, although the gallery's relationship with his work extends across many years of exhibitions, publications and close engagement with the development of his practice. During that time, his paintings - from intimate landscapes to monumental canvases - have been placed in important private collections across the United Kingdom, United States, China and beyond. This long association has provided a rare opportunity to follow the evolution of Webb's work at close quarters, from the shifting landscapes and recurring motifs that have defined his career to the bold, colour-saturated paintings of his later years. Today, his work remains immediately recognisable: exuberant, deeply felt and rooted in a lifetime spent looking at, remembering and reimagining the landscape.
