"My compulsion to paint landscapes is primarily a reaction to somehow trying to record my feelings of awe and wonder before such places, but is also a way of allowing those impressions to linger a little longer during the process of painting them"
As one of Britain's leading contemporary landscape artists, Peter Symonds is celebrated for his extraordinary ability to capture both the grandeur and intimacy of the natural world. Through richly atmospheric oil paintings, he transports the viewer across some of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth, from the sweeping glens and towering peaks of the Scottish Highlands, to the rugged cliffs and dramatic coastlines of Devon and Cornwall, the tranquil villages and rolling countryside of Surrey and Sussex, and even the warm, timeless beauty of historic Morocco. Each work reflects not only the beauty of the location itself, but also the emotion and energy of the landscape, inviting the viewer into a deeply immersive experience. Born in Surrey in 1964, Peter is a self-taught artist who began painting professionally after graduating from Leicester University at the age of twenty-two. Working exclusively in oils on canvas, he has dedicated his career to landscape painting, developing a style that is both powerful and evocative. While he is particularly associated with the Sussex and Surrey countryside surrounding his home and studio, Peter is equally renowned for his dramatic interpretations of the English Lake District and the Scottish Highlands. His passion for travel and exploration has also taken him to remote and untamed places across the world, where he continually finds inspiration in the raw beauty of nature. Symonds' paintings are driven by a profound love of the outdoors and a deep respect for the natural environment. Whether depicting mist rolling across a Highland valley, sunlight breaking through storm clouds over the sea, or the quiet stillness of a distant village, his work conveys atmosphere, movement and emotion with remarkable sensitivity. This versatility and authenticity have earned him widespread acclaim, with his paintings becoming highly collectible and featured in prestigious private and corporate collections internationally. Alongside his exhibition success, Peter has also completed numerous commissions for both private collectors and major companies.

Cornish Coast Path, Lizard PointOil on Canvas30.5 x 40.5 cms / 12 x 16 inchesSigned 'Peter Symonds' (lower left)Description
Cornish Coast Path captures the unique atmosphere and expansive beauty of Britain’s most southerly headland. Painted from the South West Coast Path overlooking the rugged Cornish shore, the work draws the viewer gently along the winding cliff-top track towards the open sea beyond, where deep blue water meets an immense sky layered with drifting cloud and bursts of brilliant coastal light. Evoking the experience of walking these ancient trails around the Lizard Peninsula, where every turn reveals sweeping views of rocky coves, hidden inlets and vast Atlantic horizons, Symonds works the composition to portray the stillness of a warm coastal afternoon and the scent of sea air carried on the wind.
The pale pathway curves softly through sun-bleached grasses towards the ochre and rust-coloured cliffs characteristic of the Lizard Peninsula, their rugged forms falling away into calm blue water below. In the middle distance, scattered white cottages perch against the landscape, lending the scene a sense of scale and quiet human presence without disturbing its serenity. Tiny boats drift almost imperceptibly offshore, while above them an enormous sky dominates the painting, filled with layered cloud formations that allow shafts of soft Cornish light to break through.
