Overview
"My paintings are a direct response to my environment, and I am most inspired by shifting light and colour and the interactions between high skies and wide landscapes" - Lucy Kent.
Lucy Kent is a British landscape artist based in Wiltshire, celebrated for her atmospheric oil paintings inspired by the changing qualities of natural light, colour and the British countryside. Her artistic education began with classical portraiture, studying at Charles Cecil Studios in Florence and London Fine Arts Studios, where she developed a strong foundation in traditional drawing and painting techniques. Returning to the English countryside, Kent gradually turned her attention towards landscape painting, finding in the natural environment an opportunity to combine her rigorous academic training with a freer, more intuitive artistic approach. The landscapes surrounding her Wiltshire home remain an enduring source of inspiration, particularly the changing seasons and fleeting atmospheric conditions that continually transform familiar scenes. Working both en plein air and from her studio, Kent frequently begins with studies painted directly from nature, which she later develops into larger compositions. Using a combination of palette knife and brush, she explores the relationship between light, colour and atmosphere, drawing upon the traditions of British landscape painting while developing a distinctive contemporary style. Her artistic practice has taken her across Britain and internationally to Italy, Sri Lanka and Kenya, where contrasting landscapes, climates and qualities of light have further enriched her approach to painting. Beyond her artistic career, Kent is passionate about philanthropy and the power of art to support charitable causes. In 2020, she founded the Art for Charity Collective, an artist-led initiative that has raised over £320,000 for charities internationally, earning her a prestigious Points of Light Award. Her paintings have attracted an enthusiastic following, with highly sought-after solo exhibitions and works held in private collections throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.

Description
Lucy Kent's Skyline III explores the shifting qualities of light and atmosphere, reflecting the British artist's growing interest in the boundary between landscape and abstraction. Rather than depicting a particular location, Kent captures the fleeting impressions of the natural world, allowing the experience of colour, weather and changing light to take precedence over recognisable forms. Originally trained in classical portraiture at Charles Cecil Studios in Florence and London Fine Arts Studios, Kent developed a strong foundation in traditional observation and painting techniques. Her return to the British countryside inspired a transition towards landscape painting, where expansive skies and changing seasons offered greater freedom for artistic expression.
Working both en plein air and in the studio, Kent combines palette knife techniques with expressive brushwork, often transforming studies made directly from nature into increasingly abstract compositions. In Skyline III, broad passages of colour and richly textured paint suggest the shifting atmosphere of an open horizon. The painting reflects Kent's contemporary interpretation of the British landscape tradition, celebrating the evocative qualities of light without the constraints of detailed representation.
