Description
The Kenyan plains offer Lucy Kent a landscape quite different from the Wiltshire countryside that first inspired her passion for painting outdoors. In Morning Clouds Across the Plains, Kenya, the breadth of the horizon and extraordinary scale of the African sky become central to her interpretation of place. The painting belongs to a wider practice shaped by travel, with Kent seeking inspiration from the varied landscapes of Britain, Italy, Sri Lanka and Kenya.
Originally trained in classical portraiture at Charles Cecil Studios in Florence and London Fine Arts Studios, Kent developed a strong foundation in traditional observation. Her subsequent transition to landscape painting offered greater artistic freedom, encouraging her to respond instinctively to changing light and atmospheric conditions. Working both en plein air and in the studio, Kent frequently develops studies made directly from nature into more expressive compositions. In Morning Clouds Across the Plains, Kenya, the openness of the landscape provides an opportunity to explore the remarkable qualities of African light, capturing the atmosphere and experience of a place rather than simply its geographical appearance.
