Sam Dolman
Description
Sam Dolman’s Iona celebrates the distinctive character of the Highland cow, a breed synonymous with Scotland’s rugged landscapes and centuries of agricultural heritage. Renowned for their resilience and distinctive shaggy coats, Highland cattle have long been admired for their ability to thrive in the challenging conditions of the Scottish countryside.
Born in Scunthorpe in 1980, Dolman initially pursued a career in accountancy before discovering his passion for painting while living in Spain. Upon returning to England, his encounters with cattle in the Peak District inspired a fascination with animal portraiture that would become central to his artistic career. His work has since expanded to encompass a remarkable variety of wildlife, united by his determination to capture the individuality of each subject. Working primarily in oil on aluminium, Dolman favours meticulous observation and painstaking attention to detail. The smooth surface allows him to achieve remarkable precision, particularly in rendering the subtle textures of fur and the expressions of his subjects. In Iona, this technical mastery is combined with an intimate understanding of animal character, creating a portrait that feels both wonderfully lifelike and deeply personal.
