Description
Peter Wileman frequently constructs his coastal subjects through layered paint and areas of exposed surface that allow colour to carry much of the structure of the image. In A Love Written in Water and Blue sections of bare canvas remain visible beneath the paint, intensifying the surrounding blues and giving greater presence to the open expanse of sky and water. The contrast between the cool atmosphere of the seascape and the sudden vertical passage of light suggests a moment when cloud parts briefly over the distant coast.
